The research of Dr. T.W. Berger involves the complementary use of experimental and theoretical approaches to developing biologically constrained mathematical models of mammalian neural systems. The focus of the majority of currentresearch is the hippocampus, a neural system essential for learning and memory functions. The goal of this research is to address three general issues: (1) the relation between cellular/molecular processes, systems-level functions, and learned behavior; (2) the extent of which the functional dynamics of neural systems are altered by activity-dependent synaptic plasticity; (3) the extent to which the essential functions of a neural system can be incorporated within a hardware representation (e.g., VLSI circuitry).

Jean-Marie Bouteiller joined the University of Southern California with a Masters in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (from University of Montpellier, FRANCE) to start a PhD in Computational Neuroscience with Prof. Michel Baudry. With this dual competency in Neuroscience and Engineering, he joined in 2002 the laboratory of Prof. Theodore W. Berger to start the development of a unique computational synaptic modeling platform that would take into account the multitude of mechanisms that comprise presynaptic terminal, cleft and postsynaptic spine. This platform has substantially grown throughout the years to include a large number of mechanisms and modulatory pathways as well as astrocytic modulation, while extending its hierarchical structure to span multiple biological scales, from biomolecular mechanisms to synapse, neuron and neuronal network.

James Weiland received his B.S. from the University of Michigan in 1988. After 4 years in industry with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines, he returned to Michigan for graduate school, earning degrees in Biomedical Engineering (M.S. 1993, Ph.D. 1997) and Electrical Engineering (M.S. 1995). He joined the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins University in 1997 as a postdoctoral fellow and, in 1999, was appointed an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Weiland was appointed assistant professor at the USC Eye Institute-University of Southern California in 2001. Currently, Dr. Weiland is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering, University of Southern California. He is Deputy Director of the Biomimetic Microelectronic Systems Engineering Research Center. Dr. Weiland’s research interests include retinal prostheses, neural prostheses, electrode technology, visual evoked responses, and implantable electrical systems. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE EMBS, the Biomedical Engineering Society, Sigma Xi, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Dong Song is a research assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Southern California.  He received the B.S. degree in biophysics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Southern California in 2003. His research interests include nonlinear systems analysis, cortical neural prosthesis, electrophysiology of the hippocampus, and development of novel modeling techniques incorporating both parametric and nonparametric modeling methods. He is a member of the American Statistical Association, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the IEEE, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Boshuo Wang is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Southern California (USC). He received his B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2010, and the M.S. degree in biomedical engineering from USC in 2013. He joined the Bioelectronic Research Lab at the USC as a Research Assistant in summer 2011. His research interests include retinal prostheses, and interface technology and electrophysiology of neural prostheses.

Professor Johnson is the founding director of the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah where he is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and holds faculty appointments in the Departments of Physics and Bioengineering. His research interests are in the areas of scientific computing and scientific visualization. Dr. Johnson founded the SCI research group in 1992, which has since grown to become the SCI Institute employing over 200 faculty, staff and students. Professor Johnson serves on several international journal editorial boards, as well as on advisory boards to several national and international research centers. Professor Johnson was awarded a Young Investigator's (FIRST) Award from the NIH in 1992, the NSF National Young Investigator (NYI) Award in 1994, and the NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow (PFF) award from President Clinton in 1995. In 1996 he received a DOE Computational Science Award and in 1997 recevied the Par Excellence Award from the University of Utah Alumni Association and the Presidential Teaching Scholar Award. In 1999, Professor Johnson was Awarded the Governor's Medal for Science and Technology from Governor Michael Leavitt. In 2003 he received the Distinguished Professor Award from the University of Utah. In 2004 he was elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, 2005 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, in 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and received the Utah Cyber Pioneer Award. In 2010 Professor Johnson received the Rosenblatt Award from the University of Utah and the IEEE Visualization Career Award. In 2012 Professor Johnson received the IEEE IPDPS Charles Babbage Award. In 2013 Professor Johnson was elected to the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association (CRA).


Bryan W. JonesBryan W. Jones

Dr. Jones is a retinal neuroscientist. His work involves understanding the complex wiring of the retina and how that connectivity is altered in disorders of retinal degeneration. Understanding how those diseases affect the intrinsic retinal circuitry has implications for rescue of vision via gene therapy, and retinal bionic or biological implants. Other research efforts involve exploring metabolomics for application in understanding physiology and medicine.

Dr. Meyer obtained her bachelors degree in astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University in 1999, and earned a PhD in computer science from the University of Utah in 2008. From 2008 until 2011 she was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University. During her last year at Harvard she was also a visiting scientist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dr. Meyer is currently an assistant professor in the School of Computing and a faculty member in the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute.

Dr. Tasdizen currently leads an interdisciplinary research effort to build computational tools for reconstructing neural circuit diagrams from large numbers of very high resolution microscopy images. Dr. Tasdizen also collaborates with researchers in the Center for Alzheimer's Care Imaging and Research (CACIR) and the Department of Neurology where he holds an adjunct faculty position.

Dr. Tasdizen is the SCI Institute's second USTAR faculty member. USTAR is an innovative, aggressive and far-reaching effort to bolster Utah's economy with high-paying jobs and keep the state vibrant in the Knowledge Age. The USTAR Support Coalition and the Salt Lake Chamber sought public and private investment to recruit world-class research teams in carefully targeted disciplines. These teams will develop products and services that can be commercialized in new businesses and industries.

Dr. Lauritzen is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Marc Laboratory at the Moran Vision Institute. His research is in ultrastructural connectomics-based large-scale functional neural network reconstruction in the mammalian retina.

Mavin Martin received his Undergraduate Degree from the University of Utah in Computer Science - Engineering Arts and Entertainment in 2013. He has researched with the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI) since 2010. Currently working on his Graduate Schooling, Mavin is currently researching Graphics and Visualization. He has found great interest in engineering artificial intelligence and code folding. With his mathematical and scientific background from his Engineering Arts and Entertainment Degree, he finds great interest in incorporating video game object techniques into robotics. His side-projects are the study of behavior in robotics and improving algorithms to predict behavior in real time.
